Step 1

The paint will dry to the touch pretty quickly, within 30 minutes. Do not write with chalk on the new chalkboard for at least 24-48 hours.

You may be better off to find markers that look a little bit like chalk, and write directly on the painted surface. I don't think this method would work with a slate, or might provide less than desirable results.

Once you’re done painting let the surface cure for at least three days and then season it by rubbing a chalk all over the entire surface and erase it. There is a thin coat of chalk that will remain which will make future chalk applications and erasing work better.
